Fujifilm Finepix F450 5.2MP Digital Camera Review

Fujifilm Finepix F450 5.2MP Digital Camera with 3.4x Optical ZoomNov. 27, 2004–
I just got this camera today, and due to the lack of reviews, was a bit concerned about purchasing it. However my cousin owns the F420 and I noticed the high quality of Fujifilm cameras (co-operated with Olympus in Japan- where Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus all originate). The camera is even smaller than I initially thought looking at pictures online. It literally fits right into the palm of my hand. The hugh LCD is also a great feature. I haven’t used the camera too much yet, but already taking test pictures I have noticed the Fujifilm quality. I have researched greatly into several compact cameras, such as the Sony T1 and the Nikon Coolpixes. Nikon lenses are very good also, but I preferred the compact square size and design of the Fuji, not to mention the larger LCD. As for the T1, my friend owns it, and at first the design of it and the huge LCD greatly impressed me, but the quality was just ughhh >:o( horrible. Besides my old digi cam was a Sony one and let’s just say it’s safe to stick to a FILM company. The picture cradle, the tiny xd picture card, battery, and etc. are wonderful. Everything looks great..!
To sum it all up..

PROS:
*great compact, sleek design!
*large 2″ LCD
*hand strap comes included (just in case [:)
*Fujifilm quality
*Trimming on the camera available. (It’s like cropping/editing on your camera!)
*Pictbridge compatible (for those who love to print pics directly)
*Video recording with audio (The larger your memory card, the longer you can record! With 512 mbs. you can record up to 156.3 minutes!) Plus the audio is actually pretty clear (you can adjust volume in the playback menu).

CONS:
*I wish there was a better optical zoom, although 3.4 is pretty standard.

Finally, for accessories, must haves are a higher xD-Picture Card, higher battery, and an optional PictBridge photo printer.
I bought a 128mb card, but I recommend a 256 or even 512, of course it all depends on how many pictures you feel you are going to take. (You can adjust the mega-pixels, giving you more or less photos).

I hope this review was of some help! On a side note, I love this camera! (:

**EDIT*****Feb. 28, 2005
It has now been about 3 months with this camera and unfortunately the review ^(up) there, may have been partially a “just out-of-the-box” review.
Basically my stand is the same, although I thought I should warn buyers of these types of small cameras…

*IF YOU ARE IMAGINING TAKING PROFESSIONAL PICS with this camera, forget it.
Yes it has a 5.2 MP capability, so it’s good for prints, but MP is not everything.
All these types of small cameras coming out these days (e.g. Sony T1, T11, etc.)have a tendency to produce blurry pictures.
Even though a picture taken on this camera’s 2″ LCD may appear clear/sharp, an upload onto your computer may produce different results.
What I have noticed is that outside, pictures for the most part come out very clear.
The majority of blurry pictures occur inside, when there is not much lighting (obviously).
This camera requires a very steady hand; less so outside, but indoor pictures very much so.
Basically, the camera requires the shutter to be pressed half-way to autofocus, and the remaining half pressed to take the picture.
I’m only a student, so I mostly find content with this camera, because it’s a nice-looking gadget.
No one has failed to express their interest in it or praise it for it’s beautiful design.
Nevertheless, I highly recommend shoppers to consider what they are looking for in a camera as their first priority in their perfect digital camera search.

Another important factor to keep in mind is that it is not only this camera that will be producing such results. I have taken a look at my friend’s Sony T1, but there is no such “perfect” camera…yet.
If you want design, the chances of sacrificing an amount of quality is quite high, and vice versa.
All small cameras will have a higher tendency to blur, because that’s what they are– small.
The larger and heavier the body of the camera, it is better able to steady itself, while smaller and lighter cameras, such as this one, will need the guidance of a steady hand to create similar photos.
I believe this camera has better photo quality than the SONY T1, because it’s lenses actually “zoom” out, while the SONY one, just zooms internally.
Also, my friend’s SONY T1’s prints were uncomparable to the prints from the F450 (considering all the small different factors, e.g. where the prints were printed, etc.).
The SONY’s color outside was so dead compared to the F450’s vivid colors.

As for the big question..
No, I do not regret purchasing this item.
I enjoy the beauty of it, while using it and enjoy showing it off (not to appear condescending in any manner..).

The FinePix F450 is a new model in the popular F-series. With five megapixels and once again a smaller metal casing in comparison to the F420, Fujifim displays high-quality digital technology in the smallest possible volume. Even if the new camera is no heavier than a mobile telephone at 150g it still reveals its true size in its features – amongst other things it boasts a generously sized 2 inch LCD monitor, a fast F2.8 lens and enough place with five megapixels for pictures that can be printed up to a size of 2- x 30cm in real photo quality. The new model achieves a sensitivity that finds no equal in this class. The champagne colored FinePix F450 displays its advantage particularly well with ISO 80 in light surroundings and pleases the user with the unusual brightness of its pictures. A newly developed Li-Ion storage battery in combination with technical improvements in the area of energy saving supplies the model with substantially longer operating times. The camera is delivered with a docking station that provides the user with simply download and charging functions. Thanks to Pict Bridge it is even possible to print without using a computer at all.

Fujifilm Finepix Z100fd 8MP Digital Camera (Black & White) Review

January 10th, 2010 No comments

Fujifilm Finepix Z100fd 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black & White)Image quality is just as important to me as the convenience of a p&s, so when my latest Canon broke due to a lens that no longer retracted, I decided to try Fuji due to the rave reviews I’ve read about its imaging technology.

Putting it through the paces, pictures came out sharp and natural in outdoor conditions, but I was somewhat disappointed with the noise and blurring that still occurred in lower light conditions despite the image stabilisation. It’s a similar fault in my old SD800IS, which I guess is a limitation of ultra-compact cameras generally. The difference in image quality between the Fuji and Canon was so small, that I think if you’ve decided to get a p&s then the Fuji is just as acceptable as any Canon in the same range. This is where the other features come into importance.

Pros:
- Non-retracting lens. This will not break or get stuck like the retracting lens that seems to afflict the Canon SD series so often.Coupled with Fuji’s better customer service and 3yr standard warranty, I felt more comfortable about shelling out $$ for a Fuji than for a Canon.
- Sexy design.I chose the copper-tone, and it’s unbelievable how beautiful it is – the Z100fd looks more like a Mont Blanc cigarette box than a camera. It truly fits in a pocket and is worthy of a home in a Louis Vuitton bag.Everything from the diagonally sliding lens to the slick metal and curved finishes will turn heads.
- Click-wheel is easy to use
- Auction mode. This allows the arrangement of 3 or 4 separate pics into one photo
- Takes SD cards
- Better photo viewing and management software than Canon SD

Cons:
- Frustrating manual.I am still trying to figure out how to change the resolution and how to download pics from the different folders in the camera
- Grainy, noisy pics in lower light.I would be happy with a 7MP or even 6MP camera if it means an improved imaging sensor.
- Slippery feel
- Lens in top corner meant the finger sometimes gets in the way
- Battery charger bulkier than Canon SD.Battery life seemed a little short

Overall – unbeatable looks, does everything you hope in a p&s, acceptable but obviously not SLR quality.

Fujifilm Finepix Z10fd 7.2MP Digital Camera (Midnight Black) Review

January 7th, 2010 No comments

Fujifilm Finepix Z10fd 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Midnight Black)I’ve been a Fujifilm faithful ever since my first digicam, the FP1300, seven digital cameras ago in 2001. With the Z10fd, it’s easy to see why; tiny, sleek eye catching design (curvy and retro looking), intuitive, easy to use interface, and great image quality.

The Z10 is a 7 megapixel camera with 25MB internal memory. I made sure I got a large memory card, a 1GB XD card (the camera also takes SD and SDHC memory cards) which stores 294 images at the highest resolution, and 18.7 minute movie clips (640×480 at 30fps).

Having owned two cameras in the Z series; the Z1 and Z3, comparisons are inevitable. The first thing of note is that you no longer require the cradle to charge the camera, or download photos/movies/sound clips. It was quite a pain having to lug that around everywhere.

As with those two, the camera powers on by sliding back the lens cover. One gripe I have though is that there isn’t a dedicated button for movie mode anymore. You must now go into the menu to access it, but I can live with that. There’s only one button on top of the camera, the shutter button, everything else in located on the back, beside the LCD.

The 2.5 inch LCD display is toughened and scratch/break resistant. The resolution is excellent. The camera has 3x optical zoom which it does without extending out of the camera body, like most other cameras.

The battery charges in about an hour, much quicker than the 140 minutes stated in the manual. Camera start up is very quick too, just under 2 seconds from my timing.

The menu is even further simplified. If, for example, you select one out of the 18 shooting modes (i.e. Manual, Auto, Natural & Flash, Natural light, Party, Sports -for moving objects, etc. There’s even a mode for Text), the screen displays text explaining what each mode is, with crystal clear sample images to illustrate. Each mode makes life easier for people like me who aren’t into much tinkering to achieve great results. Natural & Flash is one of my favourites as it takes two images; one with flash, and one with natural light near simultaneously, and you get to select one, or keep both. Most times, the photo taken in natural light comes out tops.

Movies are shot in 30fps, TV quality mode, which is becoming standard in digicams these days. You can select either the higher quality of 640×480, or lower quality of 320×240 (which gives longer clips). Quality is very good, and it’s amazing the way the camera adapts to changes in light intensity while shooting (e.g. moving from a darker indoors atmosphere to a sunny exterior).

Then we come to the major feature, face detection mode. This is a welcome feature for people like me who while handing my camera to strangers to “please take a photo of me”, hope and pray that the photo taken manages to come out focused and okay at least. In this mode, the camera locks onto facial features, up to ten faces at a time, and automatically selects the best exposure for the shot as well as eliminates red-eye, enabling great shots to be taken every time. You can also use face detection mode with the self timer, ensuring those shots you take of yourself come out great. You can still use AF/AE lock as well.

You can edit photos too; clip, rotate, and even send or receive images with other IR enabled cameras by infra red. I tried it with my PC (which is IR enabled) and it didn’t work though, shame!

The camera comes in a range of colours; black (my favourite), red, green, pink, blue, and orange.

There’s an AV cable to connect to your TV to view images or movie clips (it uses the same port as the USB and has a nice little cover for the port), and as ever, the Finepix software is first class. Photos up to A3 size can be printed in crystal clear resolution.

This camera will not please those who are used to extensive manual settings and loads of tinkering with ISO levels, white balance, and other photographic jargon, but if you’re like me, and just want to be able to whip out your camera, and without much fuss, capture the moment, this camera is for you. My current favourite gadget along with my iPod classic!

Fujifilm FinePix A101 1.3MP Digital Camera Review

January 6th, 2010 No comments

Fujifilm FinePix A101 1.3MP Digital CameraI love this camera. It worth every penny!
If you’re like me, you don’t want to spend more than $500( or even $300) to buy a close to perfect camera. But the quality should be good. Then this is it! Why? (1) You don’t see a lot camera below $200 come with flashlight, do you? (2) It’s 1.3M Pixels CCD. That means you can print 5×10 pictures. (3) PC Camera feature. (4) Compact size, easy to use.
Of courese, it has some room to improve: (1) It’s a battery-eating monster! Buy a lot of batteries or buy rechargebale batteries. (2) No optical zoom.(what do you expect for less $200?) (3) 8M smartcard is not enough. I’ve upgraded it to 64M from amazon.com for $29.(4) If it has built-in microphone would be convenient while using pc camera feature.
I suggest you can do some research and compare it with other cameras in this price range. It would surprise you.
(ps. if you want a little better quality, it has a sister product A201 which is about $60 more but 2.1M Pixels.)

Remanufactured Fujifilm Finepix E900 9MP Digital Camera (Black) Review

January 3rd, 2010 No comments

Remanufactured Fujifilm Finepix E900 9MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Black)I confess! I love this camera. And here’s some good news from a review in the June ‘06 MacWorld: the E900 won the “Top Product” award in their review of point-and-shoot digital cameras. The image quality won raves. See page 28. Also there was a review in PC World for July including the E900 in their list of the top 100 products – see page 96. The October 17th PC Magazine on page 47 rates it highly, as well. Just saw the November 06Consumer Reports which gave the E900 a “Best Buy” rating in the advanced compact camera class. As well, the December 06 MacWorld placed it in theirTop Products list on page 56. Phew! I’m tired already – and there is still one more very favorable review to mention: PC Magazine for December 06 on page 84 placed it in their top five cameras (and the only point and shoot) list. This was in their 2006 best selection. And I just got my Consumer Reports 2007 Buying Guide which placed it second out of six choices for best advanced compact camera. So, you can see, this camera comes highly recommended!

Another thing I just learned after using the E900 is that it not only has an optical viewfinder, but when you look in it when zooming (up to 30X) you see the zoom in the viewfinder as well as on the screen on the back of the unit. I never expected that from an optical viewfinder in a point-and-shoot camera!

Of course, I loved my 1963 VW beetle, too. The connection: they’re both a little homely – but superbly functional. The Fuji Finepix E900 has an acclaimed lens (my shots at F2.8 were unexpectedly sharp), extreme pixel count for a point-and-shoot camera, ease of use on automatic (but the 130 page owners manual is worth reading on a rainy afternoon), 30X total zoom, VGA quality video for up to 15 minutes at 30 fps with sound (with 1GB xD card), total control with Manual, Shutter and Aperture priority, several Auto modes.

The menus are extensive but logical and after a bit become easy to navigate. Manual focus! Flash suppression, too. On a camera that fits in the palm of your hand, easy to carry at the ready with quick startup time. A good accessory: The AC power supply to use while uploading files (frames) to your computer. Bad news to lose power during the process. Just 2 seconds upload time for each 9 Megapixel image.

With the 1 Gigabyte xD card I use, there are over 200 such shots available. For 5 MP, there are over 800 shots! For serious amateurs and professionals this camera has a feature usually found in SLRs: it will produce images in RAW format! This means someone with a powerful image editing software can do more remarkable things with their photos than one can do with JPEG or other formats.

In Picassa, the photo editing software from Google, using the zoom bar allowed amazing magnification from the highest resolution shots whilst retaining sharpness and color. Remember that scene from the film “Blade Runner” with Harrison Ford where he takes a photo and directs his computer to do enormous magnification of the image to help him get a clue? You can nearly do that with this kind of resolution and pixel count.

Hint: for uploading images to blogs, etc., use no more than the 5MP resolution – the site may choke on the higher resolutions. Well, let them eat cake! You’ve got a high res camera now, baby!
