Nikon Coolpix S50 7.2MP Digital Camera (Red) Review

March 12th, 2010 No comments

Nikon Coolpix S50 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom (Red)Nikon COOLPIX S50 is a compact, very stylish looking digital camera. This particular model has cherry-pearl red finish on the front, the top, and the bottom, accented by shiny chrome sides. The backside is black, dominated by a large LCD screen.

The lens on the S50 is of non-protruding kind, automatically covered when the camera is off.

This camera features a number of automatic scene modes, plus two automatic modes accessible with two tiny buttons on the top of the camera (anti-shake and portrait), plus a special High ISO mode. The range of manual controls is very limited. RAW file output is not possible.

The menu system on this camera is multi-level; the menus change depending on which mode the camera is on. This in turn requires jumping through several windows to change controls; this can sometimes be confusing. For example: The ISO control is in the Shooting menu, where the VR on/off control is in the Setup menu. Furthermore, if the flash is turned on, it will not fire in the BSS (best shot selector) mode, which is understandable. However, turn the self-timer on, and the flash will fire; to turn the flash off, you would need to first turn the BSS off, and only then you could reach the flash modes menu.

Look for on-line reviews with sample pictures to decide if the picture quality this camera produces will satisfy you. In my opinion, the pictures from S50 are noisy, soft, and over-sharpened. However I am willing to put up with so-so performance to have a camera that is as small as this one. If you are prepared to carry a bigger camera, you can definitely find one that takes better pictures.

Nikon COOLPIX S510 8 Megapixel Digital Camera – Silver Review

Nikon COOLPIX S510 8 Megapixel Digital Camera - SilverNikon COOLPIX S510 8 Megapixel Digital Camera – Silver

I’m a digital portrait photographer, and I have a DSLR and alot of equipment that I lug around whenever I’m on a shoot. My digital SLR is a workhorse… however, it’s heavy and it’s an expensive camera (not to mention the lenses that I work with), and it’s just not practical or logical to carry it around when I’m not doing a formal shoot with a client.

So, I looked into getting a small, compact, and cheap (money-wise) point-and-shoot camera that I could slip into my pocket or my purse for everyday moments, that I could whip out at any second and start taking pictures.
I had a Canon SD800 IS for awhile… and while it was an okay camera, it tended to blow out the highlights more often than not… so I searched again… and knowing that Nikon tends to be a bit more conservative with highlights, I came across this little camera, the s510.
I didn’t need a high-end point-and-shoot. I already have my DSLR, and high end compacts tend to be larger than a pocket… and I wanted something cheap, around $150 or so, and this fit the ticket.

The image quality is good, if you’re not expecting gallery quality photos, but it’s still great for prints up to 8×10, at least… it’s great for snapshots of friends, family, kids, pets…. it’s an everyday camera. The video quality is something I am impressed with, taking decent sized videos that look great, especially in the right lighting conditions… but the audio is so-so, so if you’re looking for a camera that’ll take clear sound files, look elsewhere.

It is definitely for people with smaller hands… if you have bigger, bulky hands, then you’ll find the small buttons annoying, especially the zoom. I’m a young female with average hands, and I don’t have a problem with it, but my boyfriend, who has much larger hands, can’t stand it.

Overall, it’s a fantastic camera if you’re not expecting miraculous pictures all the time, and if you’re just looking for a small (and it is indeed a very, VERY small camera) that you can store in your pocket or purse.

I found this review, http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/CPS510/CPS510A.HTM ,
very helpful, if you are interested in this camera.

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7 MP Digital Camera Review

March 8th, 2010 No comments

Nikon Coolpix 7900 7 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical ZoomI bought the Nikon Coolpix 7900 for my wife and daughter. We couldn’t be happier about it.

I have a Minolta Dimage A2 which is larger, heavier and more expensive and has a lot of manual adjustment capability.A small part of my almost regrets lugging the A2 around because the Nikon is so small and light and performs so well.

It has been perfect so far for any sort of snapshot we’ve used it for.If exclusively taking snapshots was all I did, I would definitely replace my A2 with one of these.I’m keeping and continuing to use the A2 because of hobby non-snapshot photography, but will be borrowing the Nikon from my wife and daughter for anytime I need a quick, easy camera for snapshots on the go.

One note:We had a Nikon Coolpix 3200 which we enjoyed very much. The 7900 is a nice upgrade from that. The only disappointing change for us from the 3200 to the 7900 is that the 3200 uses AA batteries while the 7900 requires a special rechargable battery. It lasts long, so no complaints there – but it was always nice with the 3200 to be able to grab two AAs on the road rather than recharging.

Product Description
Compact and stylishly designed in a durable black metal body, the COOLPIX 7900 not only takes great pictures but it looks great too. A sophisticated digital camera, packed with advanced features and innovations, it will help you take the best photographs in all kinds of settings and conditions. It comes equipped with a 3X Zoom-Nikkor ED lens with 38-114mm (35mm equivalent) range. Snorkeling enthusiasts and scuba divers will enjoy the new Underwater Scene Mode shoot true-to-life colors automatically, while under water. Unique new Face-priority AF feature automatically detects the human face in the frame and sets focus accordingly, making portrait shooting more accurate than ever. Nikon’s innovative D-Lighting feature adds light and detail to dark areas while leaving bright areas as they are. A handy Blur Warning function alerts you when an image is blurred because of camera movement and Nikon’s proprietary Best Shot Selector (BSS) saves the best of a series of several shots. Record VGA-size movies with sound at a very smooth 30 frames per second.
